Data Visualisation

There are many ways to represent data in graphs. It is important for you to become familiar with the graphs that feature in the different NAPLAN reports to read, compare and analyse data.

Watch the following presentation on some of the types of graphs featured in the NAPLAN results reports.

Graphs

Once you have watched the presentation, go to one of the report sites and look for a graph that shows a comparison. Links to the sites can be found in the sidebar. Post your graph onto the following Padlet and describe what it represents.

Watch Part 2 of the presentation for more information about the shape of data.

The Shape of Data

Have a look at the data and formulas for the measures of central tendency in this spreadsheet. Use the Blank spreadsheet in the useful links to copy the data. Create a chart. Use the formula function in Excel to calculate the measures of central tendency. Then change the values in the table to see how the measures of central tendency change, as well as the shape of the graph. Post your findings on the Padlet above.
