Learning Outcomes

Interpreting NAPLAN results requires statistical literacy. This entails being able to accurately read and understand the values in the reports and graphs, make comparisons between data sets, see the shape of the data and understand what it tells us about the average. A high level of statistical literacy is required to read between and beyond the data to make inferences (Chick & Pierce, 2013, p. 5).

Successful completion of the activities on this website should lead to an improvement in statistical literacy for the purpose of interpreting NAPLAN results and achieve the following learning outcomes:

  1.  The ability to identify measures of central tendency in reported NAPLAN results.
  2. The ability to calculate and use the measures of central tendency in relation to NAPLAN results.
  3. The ability to select, read and use data and graphs to answer investigative questions in interpreting NAPLAN results.
  4. The ability to compare data, use measures of central tendency, statistical reasoning and/or visual representations to make judgements on choosing an appropriate curriculum description, differentiation and student groupings based on NAPLAN data.

In addition, skills learned through this website will aid in meeting the following professional teaching standards:

1.5 Differentiate teaching to meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities

3.6 Evaluate and improve teaching programs

5.4 Interpret student data

7.3 Engage with the parents/carers (Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership, 2017)
